A Brief Encounter
He then shared that when he went for his interview to ask for asylum here in Austria, the first question that was asked of him by the interviewer was: “ What is your hope here in Austria?”   He joyfully answered, “my hope is in Jesus Christ and nothing else”.  He was granted asylum.

A Snap Shot
An "Albanian table" with young men from Kosovo is filling up.  There is a much desired list laying on an other table; people are signing their names on it... A women turns around descreetly and feeds her baby. Confused din of voices. Some Algerian men ask for coffee. The Afghan men at another table want sweet tea with milk ("sheer- tshai"). A quarter of the room looks a bit like a hairdressing salon or a barber's shop; that's the reason for the list...

Keep on Smiling
“You people (meaning those who work at the Oasis) are always smiling,” remarked a refugee to me recently.

When Hope Fades
Heda was standing near the Oasis with her two children as Tom arrived one day. There were dark circles under her dull eyes. She looked like a woman who had cried all her tears and had no energy left to cry anymore.  After exchanging greetings, she said in a flat voice, “Thomas, we just came to say good-bye. Tomorrow we are returning to Chechnya. There is nothing for us here.”
